Why aren't you a feminist?

leeraloo found a pretty interesting article in In These Times, "Girls Gone Anti-Feminist", by Susan J. Douglas, and though she had some problems with the article, leeraloo thought she’d post it as a good segue into a topic she has been meaning to explore on her blog.

And leeraloo asks 'Why aren’t you a feminist?'.

Afterthoughts

The first "Feminists arrive at three" is over and we want to thank all participants, helpers, partners, visitors who helped an idea, a dream that sprung up a couple of years ago in hot Madrid, to become true in snowy, white Tallinn. We spent five unforgettable days with intelligent, creative, talented, special people with whom we discussed different forms of violence against women. We listened, we talked, learned, explored and we found that there is still so much to be done in Estonia: starting with the meanings of the words, definitions and the understanding of the whole phenomena as far as to the demand of the specific law. We enjoyed inspiring video and film art, we were marvelled by a gorgeous burlesque performance, we danced in März and we realized how important is an existence of such an event, our own room, our environment. Time and place where we can talk, share, listen, participate, be present, be together, and through all of this increase awareness of all the wide range of issues related to feminism.
Dagmar Kase summed it up in her feminar's talk with the following words: "In 12 years, there has not been many changes in Estonia - "'feminism / feminist" and "women's liberation / women's liberation' activist' as meanings are even more distanced from each other and negative shades of these meanings are not lost. Thus, the past is not gone, it is still here with us. How to change the meanings more positive? Solving the issue is mostly related to our own attitude towards the meanings and behaviour, and depends heavily on the actions we take.
One way is to bring together people, without shame and fear, under "feminists arrive at three", which among other things proves the existence of feminists and their arrival, and no less important is the fact that feminists do not arrive in the dark, and they do not leave."
So the feminists arrived at three but they do not go away at five. See you again in November 2011!

Järelmõtted

Esimene “Feministid tulevad kell kolm” on läbi ja tahame südamest tänada kõiki osavõtjaid, abilisi, koostööpartnereid, külalisi, kes meie ideele õla alla panid ning aitasid paari aasta eest juulikuiselt palavas Madridis tärganud unistusel saada lumivalges Tallinnas rahvusvaheliseks reaalsuseks. Veetsime viis unustamatut päeva intelligentsete, loovate, andekate, eriliste inimeste seltsis, kellega koos arutlesime naiste vastu suunatud vägivalla erivormide üle. Me kuulasime, rääkisime ise, õppisime, selgitasime ja leidsime, et Eestis tuleb veel palju teha, alustades sõnade tähenduste, nähtuste definitsioonide ja asjade õigesti nimetamisega kuni vastava seaduse nõudmiseni välja. Elasime kaasa inspireerivale video- ja filmikunstile, nautisime võrratut burleski etendust, tantsisime Märzi peol ja mõistsime, kui tähtis on taolise ürituse, meie oma ruumi, keskkonna olemasolu. Koht ja aeg, kus asjadest rääkida, kogemusi jagada, kuulata, osa võtta, olla kohal, olla koos ning läbi kõige selle tõsta teadlikkust kõikidest feminismiga seotud teemadest.
Dagmar Kase võttis selle oma feminaril toimunud ettekandes kokku järgnevate sõnadega:”12 aastaga on Eestis muutunud see, et „feminism/feminist" ja „naisõiguslus/naisõiguslane" on tähendustena teineteisest veelgi rohkem kaugenenud ning tähenduste negatiivsed varjundid ei ole kadunud. Seega, minevik ei ole läinud mööda, see on veel siin ja meiega. Kuidas tähendusi positiivsemaks muuta? Küsimuse lahendamine on valdavalt seotud meiepoolse tähendustesse suhtumise ja käitumisega ning sõltub suurel määral sammudest, mida astume. Üheks võimaluseks on ilma häbi ja kartuseta koondada üritused ja inimesed nime "feministid tulevad kell kolm" alla, mis muuhulgas tõendab feministide olemasolu ja nende saabumist ning mitte vähemtähtis ei ole fakt, et feministid ei saabu pimedas ja nad ei lahku”.
Nii et feministid tulid kell kolm aga nad ei lähe kell viis ära. Kohtumiseni novembris 2011!
